Embers (5/1/2018)

The sun beneath a hollowed soul
trembles with fierce light.
Alone in silence it keeps the secrets
that once were unknown
by even those who made them up.

Darkness floats like feathers in the void
and flies away like long lost dreams.
With open arms it reaches for the night
what was then a shelter
now hidden from their eyes.

"Tonight", it thinks, "will be the last".
It sinks away from their prying gaze
and cuddles in cold blankets of dark dusty layers of cloud.

The warmth is gone: stolen away, again,
by those who breathe.
Those, who think they own the day,
shiver in the twilight like crackling coals
cooling in the fire pit.

Crack, crack, crack.
Like hammers breaking bones.
They, whose souls are barren,
cower when the light is gone.
