Cold wind whispers in the night
As withering leaves rustle between
The bright circle cast by the lamppost light
And eternal darkness.
A step or two away,
Ten thousand miles,
Her figure becomes
distant:
Unreal beyond reach.
With every stride, fifty
thousand more,
She flies away.
A heartbeat, maybe
two,
Five hundred years
she’s gone.
Her face a long lost
treasured memory:
Something to remember
or yearn,
A soulless trinket of
joy,
Of past lives;
An eternity of
goodbyes and bygones
And words unsaid.
Another step, another
thousand millenniums,
Six million light
years away,
A black hole.
Her silhouette still
visible like the light of a thousand stars
In the dark corners
of a galaxy so far,
Beyond the lamppost
light.
Another step.
A single blink.
A sudden stop.
She turns around.
A sweet smile and
honey eyes.
Eternal.
Time turns to
feathers and then she’s gone.
I blink again, and
the light flickers.
I stare beyond the
universe past the lamppost light.
The wind blows again.
Withered leaves
rustle in the night.
